The Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Executive Health Department held a symposium for the public on cancer research. The aim was to showcase the diversity and quality of cancer research ongoing in Scotland, and to raise public awareness and understanding. The symposium was opened by the Minister for Health and Community Care, Malcolm Chisholm.
Invited speakers and topics are:
Screening and Prevention of Large Bowel Cancer - Professor Malcolm Dunlop
Getting New Drugs to the Patient - Professor Jim Cassidy
The Development of Personalised Treatment - Professor David Lane
Herpes Simplex Virus in Cancer Therapy - Professor Moira Brown
The keynote speaker was Dr Peter Boyle, Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), based in Lyon. The IARC was established in 1965 as an extension of the World Health Organization, out of an initial French initiative. Dr Boyle, who is a cancer epidemiologist and biostatistician, has been asked to give an overarching perspective on cancer and cancer research, comparing and contrasting Scotland with other European countries. Cancer charities involved in research, including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Macmillian Cancer Relief and Cancer Research UK, were invited to take stalls at the symposium to disseminate their activities.
