Some of Scotland’s leading jazz musicians will be featured in high-profile French festivals in 2004, as the result of a new initiative between the Scottish Arts Council, AFIJMA and the Bath Festival in England.
This new collaboration aims to develop long-term partnerships, to strengthen relationships between festivals, promoters and funders in each country, to raise awareness amongst programmers and promoters of musicians and bands and to co-ordinate touring plans of these artists.
In the short-term, The Scottish Arts Council has put together a portfolio of diverse Scots jazz groups to perform in French festivals in 2004. These performances will also be used as a ‘showcase’ opportunity for other promoters, journalists, record distributors etc, to hear some of Scotland’s leading jazz artists. These include groups such as Trio AAB, John Rae’s Celtic Feet, Colin Steele Quintet, Tommy Smith Quartet, Dave Milligan Trio, Bachue, Brian Kellock solo piano, Chick Lyall solo piano, Kevin McKenzie’s Vital Signs and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.
There is also an opportunity for French jazz groups to tour Scotland as part of the SAC’s new programme of subsidised contemporary music touring, Tune Up. Erik Truffaz group will be touring in Scotland as part of this programme in April 2004. There will be further possibilities in Autumn 2004 for another French jazz group to tour Scotland.
The Director of the Bath Festival Jazz Weekend, Nod Knowles will host a seminar/ meeting of French and Scottish promoters/producers in the jazz field to discuss the development of Franco/Scottish links.
